Disposable Tableware Industry Glossary

Definitive 2026 definitions of 30 industry terms — MOQs, certifications, printing methods, compostability standards, shipping incoterms, and production vocabulary — compiled from in-house factory data at Diningprint by Sam Gao, Founder.

Trade & Ordering

MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity)

The smallest number of units a factory will produce in one run. For custom-printed chopsticks in 2026: 20,000 pairs at offset 1-color sleeves, 50,000 at full-color CMYK, 5,000 at short-run digital, and 1,000 at trial-order programs. Any seller offering 'any quantity, any design' is almost certainly a trading company subcontracting to a factory.

FOB (Free on Board)

Incoterm where the seller covers cost up to goods being loaded on the vessel at origin port. Buyer covers ocean freight, insurance, and import duties. Most factory-direct quotes from China list 'FOB Dalian' or 'FOB Shanghai' as the price basis.

CIF (Cost Insurance Freight)

Incoterm where the seller covers cost, marine insurance, and ocean freight to the destination port. Buyer handles import duties and inland transport. Higher quoted price than FOB but simpler for buyers without forwarding arrangements.

DDP (Delivered Duty Paid)

Incoterm where the seller covers cost, freight, insurance, AND destination-country import duties through to the buyer's address. Highest seller-side burden; convenient for retail buyers who want a single landed-cost number.

Trial-order print run

A small one-time digital print run, typically 1,000 to 5,000 pairs of chopsticks or kits of cutlery, used to test artwork and material on real product before committing to a full offset MOQ. No plate or die fees. Per-unit cost is higher than offset but total project cost is far lower for any run under ~20,000 units.

Trading company

An intermediary that buys from a factory and resells to an overseas buyer, typically adding 10–25% markup. Common in Southern China (Yiwu, Shenzhen, Guangzhou) for the chopstick and disposable-tableware categories. Multi-layer trading chains can inflate factory-gate prices 30–80% by the time goods reach a Western buyer.

Materials

Birchwood (Betula platyphylla)

Tight-grained pale hardwood from Northern Chinese forests. Standard wood for premium tensogue chopsticks. More expensive than bamboo but offers a cleaner print surface, no flavor transfer, and the blonde glassy finish required for fine-dining sushi. Unit cost typically $0.015–$0.025 per pair with a custom sleeve.

Bamboo

Technically a grass, not a wood. Regrows from rhizome in 3–5 years without replanting, making it the most sustainable disposable-chopstick material. Strong, FSC-certifiable, prints reliably. The workhorse material for roughly 80% of restaurant chopstick orders. Unit cost $0.008–$0.015 per pair with custom sleeve.

Aspen

Soft pale hardwood. The cheapest common disposable-chopstick material. Whiter than bamboo or birch — produces vivid day-1 prints, but the wood is weaker and prints fade over warehouse storage. Best for high-volume takeout where unit cost beats brand longevity.

Tensogue (天削) chopstick

Premium Japanese-style chopstick with a hand-tipped tapered point. Almost always birchwood, prized for its tight grain, smooth surface, and complete absence of flavor or aroma. The standard at omakase and high-end sushi restaurants worldwide. Common lengths: 200, 210, 240 mm.

Printing

Hot stamp foil printing

Metallic foil (gold, silver, copper) pressed directly onto the chopstick wood with a heated die. Adds $0.003–$0.006 per pair on top of base cost, plus a one-time die fee of $80–$250 per design. MOQ typically 30,000–50,000 pairs. Premium look used at hotel groups, omakase, and luxury gifting.

Offset printing

Full-color CMYK process printing on paper sleeves. Requires metal plate setup ($120–$300 per design). Best cost economics above ~50,000 sleeves. The workhorse method for full-color branded chopstick sleeves at restaurant chains and ghost kitchens.

Digital printing

Plate-free printing directly onto paper sleeves from a digital file. Accepts orders from 5,000 sleeves with no setup fee. Per-piece cost is higher than offset but total project cost is lower for runs under ~20,000 units. Ideal for variable artwork, seasonal menus, and small restaurant trial runs.

CMYK

Four-color (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black) process printing standard used for full-color sleeve artwork. Approximates Pantone brand colors with some inevitable shift, especially in vivid blues, greens, and oranges. For brand-color accuracy, request spot Pantone printing rather than CMYK approximation.

Pantone matching

Color-specification system using numbered ink swatches. For brand-accurate chopstick sleeves, request spot Pantone printing on the press rather than CMYK simulation. Costs more per run but ensures brand colors match the buyer's guide precisely.

Certification

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification

International certification covering both the forest origin and the chain of custody from forest to factory. Required by most European, Australian, and increasingly US retail buyers. FSC-certified bamboo and birchwood are widely available; expect a $0.001–$0.003 per-pair premium versus uncertified material.

FDA food-contact compliance

US Food and Drug Administration approval confirming that material is safe for direct food contact. Wooden chopsticks earn FDA compliance via high-temperature steam sterilization (10+ hours) during manufacturing. Untreated wood that has been properly heat-treated meets FDA and equivalent LFGB (Germany) standards.

BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative)

Third-party social-audit standard covering labor practices, wages, working hours, and safety at the manufacturer. Required by many European retailers and brand owners as part of supplier qualification.

BRC (Brand Reputation Compliance) global standard

Audit framework for product safety, quality, and packaging integrity, originally developed by the British Retail Consortium. Common requirement from UK and EU foodservice and retail buyers.

SGS certification

Independent third-party verification by SGS Group covering material composition, food-contact safety, manufacturing origin, and physical-property testing. Commonly bundled with FSC, FDA, and BSCI audits in a single supplier-qualification package.

Compostability

Biodegradable

Material that breaks down naturally over time through biological action. Untreated wooden cutlery and chopsticks are biodegradable: decomposition is 6–12 months in home compost, 8–12 weeks in industrial compost. Many PLA-style 'biodegradable' plastic cutleries are biodegradable only in industrial conditions, not in home compost, landfills, or the ocean.

Compostable

Stricter than biodegradable: a certified claim that material breaks down within a specified time in a specified facility (ASTM D6400 in the US, EN 13432 in the EU). Untreated wooden cutlery is industrially compostable without needing a material-level sticker. Surface treatments (paraffin wax, industrial preservatives) can disqualify wood from clean compostability.

ASTM D6400

US industrial-compostability standard. Specifies the time (typically 84–180 days), temperature, and conditions under which compostable material must break down. Required for 'compostable' claims in many US municipal composting and retail-procurement programs.

EN 13432

European industrial-compostability standard equivalent to ASTM D6400. Specifies biodegradation, disintegration, ecotoxicity, and heavy-metal limits for materials marketed as compostable in the EU.

Production

Paper sleeve / wrapper

Paper wrap around individual chopsticks or a cutlery kit. The primary surface for branded printing. Custom sleeves accept offset CMYK, hot-stamp foil, or digital print; sleeve MOQ is 20,000 for offset, 5,000 for digital.

Chain of custody

Documentation tracing material from origin (forest or bamboo plantation) through every handler — sawmill, factory, exporter — to the finished product. Required by FSC certification. Chain-of-custody certificates name the manufacturing entity; if your printed sleeve advertises FSC but the documentation names a trading intermediary, an EU or Australian retail audit will flag the mismatch.

Sugar degradation (in wood pulp)

Slow fermentation-like breakdown of residual sugars in wooden pulp stored over a hot, humid Northern Chinese summer. Causes the sweet-sour odor in chopsticks and cutlery produced from autumn pulp. The reason quality Northern factories halt production every July, August, and September.

Spring stock (pre-summer pulp)

Disposable wood tableware produced from March to June pulp, before the Northern Chinese summer. The cleanest finish and lowest odor risk. Premium-grade buyers (sushi bars, fine-dining hotel chains) specifically request spring-stock production for odor-sensitive SKUs.

Buyer segments

Ghost kitchen

Restaurant brand that exists only via delivery and pickup; no dine-in storefront. Branded disposable tableware (sleeves, kits, napkins) is the primary brand surface a customer sees, making custom-printed packaging unusually high-leverage for this buyer segment.

Four-layer sourcing chain

Typical structure of China's disposable-tableware supply chain: Northern Chinese factory → Northern regional dealer → Southern trading company → Western buyer. Each layer adds 10–25% markup; cumulative inflation over factory-gate price is usually 30–60% on plain SKUs and 60–80% on full-color printed sleeves at low MOQ.
